Prairie Springs Fish Farm was established in 1959 by Jim and Keity Driscoll. Under construction from 1959 to 1961, the fish farm began stocking live fish throughout Eastern Oregon in 1961. Son Dan and wife Deanne began raising Pacific White Sturgeon on the property in 1989. In recent years, their focus shifted completely to Rainbow Trout and Donaldson Steelhead. These species are native to the Northwest and therefore do well when stocked in local waters.
Prairie Springs Fish Farm operates under license from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and receives transportation permits for each shipment. A live-haul truck is used for deliveries.
Water is the key to successful fish farms and Prairie Springs is no exception. The facility uses pure artesian water sourced on the property for hatching and rearing activites. This insures healthy, fast growing fish. A series of cleaning ditches, settling ponds and wetland filters purify the water prior to release.
Fertilized fish eggs are purchased and hatched in fish incubators four times a year. The hatch house holds the fry until large enough for the outside concrete raceways where they mature until sold.
The fish are fed a special formula of protein, fat, and vitamins that produces strong, healthy fish.
